Free Workshop: Earth, A Cosmic Spectacle
Saturday 23 August, 2-4pm
Have you ever wanted to learn more about your role in the universe? This summer is your chance to find out , with a free workshop run by artist Louise Beer and astronomer Richard Darn.
Through talks and creative activities, they’ll work with you to explore your links to both the universe and Earth’s deep-time history through science and art.
As part of this workshop, you’ll have the opportunity for your creations to be featured as part of an exhibition of Louise’s work later this year in the gallery, Earth, A Cosmic Spectacle.
About Earth, A Cosmic Spectacle
The project Earth, A Cosmic Spectacle, is a project led by artist Louise Beer.
Louise explores deep time, contrasting Earth’s slow evolution with the rapid changes of the Anthropocene. Gathering reflections from astronomers, biologists, geologists, and high school students, she uses photography, sound and discussion to connect audiences emotionally to Earth’s history and climate crisis.
Louise works closely with scientists to explore how understanding the universe’s 13.8-billion-year history can deepen our awareness of the cosmic significance of the climate crisis. Through digitally manipulating photography, she combines images of Earth and space to juxtapose the long, slow development of life, the fleeting nature of a lifetime, and the accelerating pace of the climate crisis. Accompanied by a soundscape of birdsong and cosmic recordings, Louise places Earth’s natural sounds from the local environment within a universal framework.
Louise’s work invites to you to experience a care connection to the environment. She uses science and art to make complex scientific and environmental ideas accessible, and to help audiences realise their deep links to the universe and Earth’s deep-time history and future.
