Announcing Our Upcoming Exhibition ‘Earth, A Cosmic Spectacle’
Saturday 6 December 2025 - Saturday 7 March 2026
Earth: A Cosmic Spectacle is coming to The Everybody Gallery this December. Part of a lifelong project undertaken by artist Louise Beer, this exhibition brings together previous work and new pieces made in and responding to nature in Calderdale.
Gathering reflections from astronomers, biologists, geologists and community members, the exhibition makes complex scientific and environmental ideas accessible and shows their relevance to our lives.
Louise’s stunning photography and socially engaged practice explores deep time, contrasting Earth’s slow evolution with the rapid changes and climate crisis in our current times.
Louise was selected for Everybody Arts’ first Spotlight commission, kindly funded by Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council’s Culture Grants 2025-2028. This exhibition will present new work created by Louise during her time exploring the land and skies above Calderdale, as well as work created by local residents who took part in a workshop with Louise in August where they created their own responses to the night sky.
Throughout this exhibition, Everybody Arts invites both Calderdale residents and wider visitors to the gallery to take part in a free activity designed by Louise where they respond to the night sky on specially made postcards. These are free to pick up from the gallery and, once returned, will be included in the exhibition.
We’re thrilled to have an exciting programme of ways you can get involved with the exhibition - read on to find out more!
“I had a wonderful time immersed in the Yorkshire landscapes, reflecting on their long and slow formation, and all the life they contain.
I hope this exhibition inspires audiences to think about their own place within our vast universe, and the preciousness of every fragment of the world around us.”
About the Artist
Louise Beer lived in Aotearoa New Zealand until 2002 before moving to the UK, where she now works between London, Margate and Aotearoa New Zealand. Louise uses installation, moving image, photography, audience participation works and sound to explore humanity's evolving understanding of Earth’s environments and the cosmos.
Louise is currently artist in residence at the Institute of Astronomy, University of Cambridge, developing the wider project Earth, A Cosmic Spectacle with Dr. Matthew Bothwell. This builds on the first iteration in 2023-4, funded by a British Council grant, where she worked with Dr Ian Griffin at Tūhura Otago Museum, Aotearoa New Zealand. The exhibition in The Everybody Gallery merges both iterations, as well as incorporating new elements from Halifax and the surrounding area.
